AVID at Lydia Jackson Elementary

At Lydia Jackson Elementary, AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination) is at the heart of our commitment to preparing students for college, career, and lifelong success. In the elementary grades, AVID provides a strong foundation by teaching essential skills such as organization, goal setting, note-taking, communication, and collaboration. Students learn age-appropriate academic behaviors and develop a growth mindset, helping them build the confidence and habits needed to thrive in middle school, high school, and beyond.

Our classrooms use the WICOR framework — Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization, and Reading — to actively engage students in their learning. Through WICOR strategies, students learn to think critically, ask meaningful questions, communicate effectively, and take ownership of their education.

Our dedicated staff participates in the AVID Summer Institute every year to deepen their practice and bring the most effective strategies back to our classrooms. In addition, Lydia Jackson proudly hosts two AVID Showcases each year, where educators from other schools visit our campus to observe and learn from our successful implementation of AVID strategies in action.
